The Environment Agency monitor water levels on the Cod Beck at Dalton, and this is a very useful guide to the current condition of the beck. Under ideal conditions the river level should be falling and be between 1 – 0.6m Anything over 1.2ms usually means it is coloured and either rising or falling. No-one should wade if the gauge shows a rising river above 1m.
